AI Act

The AI Act lays down rules for the deployment and development of artificial intelligence in the European Union with the aim of taking advantage of opportunities without losing sight of risks. The Bundesnetzagentur is currently set to play a key role in implementing the AI Act in Germany, with preparatory activities already underway.

If you use or offer AI systems and are not sure if or how far the AI Act is relevant for you, our AI compliance compass will be a good starting point.

AI Act in brief

  • Aim: to promote the development and use of trustworthy AI in the EU, enable innovation and minimise risks, while safeguarding health, safety and fundamental rights.
  • Applicability: the various rules in the AI Act become applicable in stages; the AI Act will be fully applicable as from August 2027.
  • Target group: the AI Act is addressed to companies, public authorities and organisations that deploy or develop AI.
  • Risk-based: AI systems are analysed based on how they are deployed and are classified for users according to the risk they pose. Most AI systems pose no or minimal risk. However, the higher the risk posed by a system, the higher the transparency, safety and compliance requirements to be met by the system.
  • EU responsibility: the European AI Office is responsible for general-purpose AI models such as large language models.

The information on these web pages is intended as guidance and is non-binding. Binding interpretations of the AI Act can only be made by the national courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
