Local Networks
The Federal Republic of Germany is currently divided into 5,200 geographic areas for the purpose of addressing user accesses in public telephone networks. To each area an area code is assigned, beginning with a digit between 2 and 9 and preceded by the prefix (0). The area code indicates the geographic location of an access.
Providers of telecommunications services may request the numbering administration to provide them with telephone number blocks (1000 or 10,000 subscriber numbers) for the individual local networks. Single subscriber numbers, including numbers for PBXs, can only be obtained from providers! Details concerning the number blocks allocated to the individual access network operators are given in the List of allocated number blocks. The procedure is detailed in the "Rules for the allocation of local numbers".
There are plans for amending these rules. An initial draft of the amendment can be obtained from the Federal Network Agency for Electricity, Gas, Telecommunications, Post and Railway, Referat 117, Postfach 80 01, D-53105 Bonn, Germany.
