In autumn 2024, the Bundesnetzagentur and the UBA jointly conducted an online survey of more than 1,500 German businesses to determine the degree to which digitalisation and environmental sustainability are currently interlinked in business practice.

The findings show that most businesses consider both topics to be important for their competitiveness, develop relevant strategies and employ dedicated staff. However, a direct link between the two is less common. Many businesses give consideration to the energy efficiency of their IT and extend the useful lives of their hardware. Used hardware is passed on less often, among other things for security reasons. A small number of cloud users take account of sustainability criteria when choosing their provider.
