Current status of gas supply in Germany
The Bundesnetzagentur publishes an assessment of the gas supply situation in its status report. It also provides key data on flows, storage levels, gas consumption and price developments in interactive graphics.
Status report
- The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) has revoked the alert level of the gas emergency plan in Germany, which had been in place since 23 June 2022. The early warning level has applied since 1 July 2025.
- German gas storage levels are currently much lower than at the same time in previous years. The Bundesnetzagentur is taking this development very seriously. Pipeline imports, storage facilities, LNG imports, infrastructure and demand together play decisive roles in ensuring security of supply.
- It is essentially the task of gas traders to prepare for the winter and put gas into storage. They have obligations to provide gas to municipal utility companies, suppliers, industry and other customers and must take adequate precautions. To this end, they turn to pipeline imports, LNG imports and stored gas volumes and achieve the best possible price for their procured gas. There is enough gas available on the world market and there are enough opportunities to import it.
- The Bundesnetzagentur is paying close attention to developments in the Middle East. The price effects on the global markets are affecting European wholesale prices. Whether, and to what extent, customers feel the effect of these prices depends on the length of the conflict, the procurement strategy of suppliers and contractual arrangements.
- The gas supply in Germany is stable. The security of supply is safeguarded at present. The Bundesnetzagentur’s current findings lead it to consider the risk of a tight gas supply to continue to be low. The Bundesnetzagentur is continuously monitoring the situation and evaluating it with a particular focus on the requirement for storage levels to be 30% on 1 February 2027. As prices continue to be high, it is sensible for household customers to use gas sparingly.

Background information
There are three levels used to prepare for possible disruptions or interruptions to gas supply in line with the German Energy Security of Supply Act (EnSiG), the EU SoS Regulation (SoS) and the Emergency Plan for Gas:
- Early warning level
- Alert level
- Emergency level
The initiation of the individual crisis levels depends on the severity of the disruption, the expected economic and technical impact and the urgency of resolving the disruption at the national level.
In the event that the emergency level is declared, the Bundesnetzagentur becomes the national supply coordinator and takes on the statutory duty of distributing and allocating the scarce gas resources during the crisis. It does so in close coordination with gas network operators.
