Current status of gas supply in Germany

The Bundesnetzagentur publishes an assessment of the gas supply situation in its status report, which is updated daily. It also provides key data on flows, storage levels, gas consumption and price developments in interactive graphics.

Status report

  • The alert level of the gas emergency plan has been in place since 23 June 2022. The Bundesnetzagentur is monitoring the situation carefully and is in close contact with the system operators.
  • The gas supply in Germany is stable. The security of supply is safeguarded. The Bundesnetzagentur currently considers the risk of a tight gas supply to be low. Nevertheless, the need to save gas is still important.
  • Gas flows to Germany are stable and balanced.
  • To secure the gas supply for next winter, there must be a storage level of 85% by 1 October 2024.
  • Gas consumption in the week beginning 8 April 2024 was 34.2% below the average between 2018 and 2021 and 12.8% down on the previous week.
  • Wholesale prices have fallen slightly in the last few weeks. However, businesses and private consumers should still expect prices to fluctuate.

Background information

The Bundesnetzagentur has created gas scenarios for the current winter. The aim of them is to better classify the supply
situation and potential challenges so as to identify and quantify the remaining risks to supply this winter.

FAQ (pdf / 82 KB)

There are three levels used to prepare for possible disruptions or interruptions to gas supply in line with the German Energy Security of Supply Act (EnSiG), the EU SoS Regulation (SoS) and the Emergency Plan for Gas:

  1. Early warning level
  2. Alert level
  3. Emergency level

The initiation of the individual crisis levels depends on the severity of the disruption, the expected economic and technical impact and the urgency of resolving the disruption at the national level.

In the event that the emergency level is declared, the Bundesnetzagentur becomes the national supply coordinator and takes on the statutory duty of distributing and allocating the scarce gas resources during the crisis. It does so in close coordination with gas network operators.
