Projects of Common Interest

Regulation (EU) No 347/2013 on guidelines for trans-European energy infrastructure (TEN‑E) has been in force since June 2013. The TEN‑E Regulation is designed to help achieve the EU's energy policy objectives, complete the internal market in energy, and guarantee security of supply.

It is also designed to promote energy efficiency and the development of renewable forms of energy. This requires effective and accelerated network expansion, among other things.

The TEN‑E Regulation sets out how to identify and define projects of common interest. The criteria include the economic, social and environmental benefits of the projects as well as transboundary effects for at least two Member States.

The projects are included in a Union list of projects of common interest, which is adopted as a delegated act by the European Commission.

The fourth and current list entered into force on 31 March 2020. Further information is available on the European Commission website.

Details of the German projects included in the latest Union list of projects of common interest are available (in German) at www.netzausbau.de/pci (in German).
