Bundesnetzagentur determines route corridor for section of A-Nord power line
Decision on Section C between the area of Wietmarschen and the Borken/Schermbeck area
Year of issue 2021
Date of issue 2021.07.02
The Bundesnetzagentur finalised federal sectoral planning for another section of the A-Nord DC link. The decision relates to the section between the area of Wietmarschen and the Borken/Schermbeck area.
The route corridor, which is approximately 93 kilometres, begins in the rural district of Grafschaft Bentheim in Lower Saxony and runs along the Dutch border. In North Rhine-Westphalia the route corridor will run through the district of Steinfurt, partially along the A 31 motorway, and end in the district of Borken. There it connects to the route corridor already determined for the section between the Borken/Schermbeck area and Osterath.

Next step: planning approval procedure
Once the federal sectoral planning has been completed, the next step is the planning approval procedure. In this stage of the approval process, the exact route within the route corridor will be determined. During this process there will be further comprehensive public participation. The Bundesnetzagentur expects the application for planning approval to be submitted in the third quarter of 2021.

Background
Together, the A-Nord power line and the Ultranet link to the south form the A direct current corridor. A-Nord runs from Emden Ost to Osterath. The line, which is planned to go into operation in 2025, will use underground cables with capacity of up to 2 GW. Federal sectoral planning for A-Nord takes place in four stages.
