Bundesnetzagentur begins data survey of German gas network operators

The Bundesnetzagentur today began collecting data from gas network operators for the gas security platform. The survey will last until 28 April 2022.

"We are working intensely to prepare for a situation where the Bundesnetzagentur must order supply reductions for major gas consumers. At the same time we are doing everything to keep that situation from occurring," said Klaus Müller, Bundesnetzagentur President.

Data survey of major gas consumers in May

The data survey of gas network operators is a preparatory step for a data survey of German gas consumers that have a technical connection capacity of at least 10 MWh/h. The survey of those undertakings is scheduled for May 2022.

The objective is to provide the Bundesnetzagentur with current data in the event of a significantly worse gas supply situation in Germany or EU Member States. In such a situation it would be the Bundesnetzagentur's task to coordinate gas consumption.

The survey results will enable the Bundesnetzagentur to optimally assess the consequences of measures for the final customers affected and for society.

The platform is planned to go live on 1 October 2022.

Gas security platform

In the medium term it is planned for the data to be made available on the gas security platform. All major gas consumers with a connection capacity of at least 10 MWh/h, gas network operators and all balancing group managers such as gas supply companies or gas traders will be required to register on the platform. The 10 MWh/h threshold covers a large portion of the consumers and ensures efficient management in the event of a crisis.

The security platform is being developed jointly by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), the Bundesnetzagentur and Trading Hub Europe.
