Bundesnetzagentur publishes indicators on gas supply situation

Klaus Müller: "We will assess the acute risk of a gas deficit situation"

Year of issue 2022
Date of issue 2022.11.30

The Bundesnetzagentur will publish indicators on the gas supply in Germany starting today. The indicators will be used to evaluate the gas supply for winter 2022/2023.

"We will show transparently if there is an acute risk of a gas deficit situation. The indicators will provide us with a rapid assessment and forecast of the current situation. This continual monitoring will enable us to step in early and take countermeasures," said Klaus Müller, Bundesnetzagentur President. "As of today, all indicators are stable".

Indicators and status assessment

The Bundesnetzagentur will use five indicators to assess the German gas supply:

  • temperature forecast;
  • temperature-adjusted gas consumption;
  • storage levels;
  • situation in neighbouring countries; and
  • procurement of balancing gas.

These indicators provide a basis for the assessment of the situation under the gas emergency plan. Each one can be graded as "stable", "tense" or "critical". They will feed into a discussion of a gas deficit situation and a declaration of the emergency level, but do not determine in themselves when the emergency level should be declared. They are not suitable to identify gas deficits at the local level.

The indicators will be updated regularly on the Bundesnetzagentur's website.

Current data on the gas supply

The Bundesnetzagentur publishes a status report on the gas supply daily from Monday to Friday. As well as the indicators, it includes current data on gas imports and exports, storage levels, gas consumption and the latest price developments. The data are published at
