Progress in electricity grid expansion

Klaus Müller: "Significant progress in the approval procedures"

Year of issue 2023
Date of issue 2023.01.09

By the end of 2022, the Bundesnetzagentur had approved route corridors for around 5,000 km of power lines. This is more than two thirds of the kilometres of lines under the Bundesnetzagentur's responsibility. The exact routes of these lines within the route corridors will now be determined in the planning approval procedure.

"The expansion of the electricity grid is absolutely necessary to achieve the objectives of the energy transition. The renewable energy generated in the north of the country must also be able to be transported," said Klaus Müller, President of the Bundesnetzagentur. "We have made a huge effort to drive forward our procedures in 2022 and will continue to speed up the procedures in all conceivable ways. Each kilometre approved brings us a step further in expanding the grid."

Majority of kilometres of lines in the approval procedure

A total of around 14,000 km of power lines are planned for the expansion of the transmission network. The Bundesnetzagentur is responsible for about 7,300 km, or well over half, of all the lines. At the end of 2022, around 700 km of these lines were in the federal sectoral planning procedure, 5,000 km were in or about to start the planning approval procedure and 230 km had been approved or were under construction.
