Initial results of the nationwide mobile network measurement week
Year of issue 2025
Date of issue 2025.06.06
The first national “Mobilfunkmesswoche” (mobile network measurement week) took place from 26 May to 1 June 2025. The measurement week is a joint initiative of the federal government, federal states and municipalities.
"The measurement week was a huge success. Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who participated. The measurements enabled us to expand our data by around 145 million new test points, providing us with an up-to-date picture of mobile coverage in Germany from the users’ perspective,"
said Klaus Müller, President of the Bundesnetzagentur.
Throughout the measurement week more than 150,000 users measured coverage at test points, with 4G and 5G technology accounting for a vast majority (around 98%) of the test points. Just over 1% of the test points had 2G technology, and at less than 1% of the test points users determined there was no coverage. As anticipated, the most test points were located in Germany’s most populous federal state, North Rhine-Westphalia. Charts and tables for regional assessments of the measurement week data will be available for rural districts and towns in mid-June.
Data usage
Users can use the Bundesnetzagentur’s broadband speed checker/dead spot app (“Breitbandmessung”) to measure the availability of their mobile communications network. The respective network availability (no network, 2G, 4G, 5G) is stored on the smartphone and transmitted to the broadband speed checker. The app is available for free in app stores.
The data from the test points is anonymised and added to the Bundesnetzagentur’s interactive dead spot map. The data shows how users experience mobile communications and can be filtered by region. The map is updated weekly.
The individual test points are allocated to grids on different display levels and aggregated there. The measurement week data will be visible on the map within the next few days.
As part of its mobile communications monitoring the Bundesnetzagentur also uses the data to check the information provided by mobile providers.
The map and further information (in German) on the broadband speed checker/dead spot app can be found on the broadband speed checker website (https://breitbandmessung.de (in German)).
