Dr Karsten Wildberger: "We want to support businesses working with AI as best as possible"
Year of issue 2025
Date of issue 2025.07.03
Dr Karsten Wildberger, the Federal Minister for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation, is presenting a new support service – the "AI Service Desk" at the Bundesnetzagentur – at a conference on artificial intelligence (AI) in Frankfurt today. The aim of the service is to provide practical information about the new EU requirements for using and developing AI. In doing so, the AI Service Desk will help to increase legal certainty for those implementing the EU’s AI Act. The service is designed primarily for businesses, in particular small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups, as well as authorities and organisations.
Federal Minister Dr Karsten Wildberger:
"Businesses need a clear and reliable framework for developing and successfully implementing innovative AI solutions. We want to support them as best as possible. The new AI Service Desk will act as a central point of contact to help businesses in complying in an efficient and practical way with the complex requirements of the EU’s AI Act. This signalises how we imagine national AI supervision to be: business and innovation-friendly, with slim and swift structures and clear guidance for businesses. This will put Germany at the forefront in Europe in developing and using responsible AI technology."
Bundesnetzagentur President Klaus Müller:
"Our aim is to put the spotlight on the potential of artificial intelligence. Our AI Service Desk will provide guidance in implementing the EU’s rules. We are creating a reliable, central point of contact for anyone wanting help with the new rules of the AI Act. This will support businesses in developing and using artificial intelligence in a responsible way."
User-friendly information, interactive checker tool
The AI Service Desk will be on hand to offer practical information for businesses, authorities and organisations on all issues relating to the AI Act. Users will be able to access an interactive compliance compass as a quick and easy tool to check whether and how far the AI Act applies to the systems they use. The tool will indicate whether a user’s AI system is subject to regulation, whether transparency obligations apply and whether the system could be classed as a high-risk system or a prohibited practice.
The AI Service Desk will also provide practical information and illustrative examples to give users a better understanding of the provisions of the AI Act. This will include guidance on the rules already in place for AI literacy, which aim to ensure that anyone using, providing or developing AI systems has a sufficient degree of AI literacy. The AI Service Desk will also be able to provide information about free training for employees.
The AI Act
The EU’s AI Act, which entered into force on 2 August 2024, serves to ensure the secure and trustworthy use of AI in the EU. At the same time, the AI Act also promotes innovation by creating a framework for the development and use of AI.
The Bundesnetzagentur is currently set to play a key role in implementing the AI Act in Germany, with preparatory activities already underway.
The AI Service Desk’s information platform is accessible at www.bundesnetzagentur.de/ki (in German). The service will gradually be expanded.
