Further progress in grid expansion: Bundesnetzagentur approves another SuedLink section in Hesse
Year of issue 2025
Date of issue 2025.07.10
The Bundesnetzagentur has today completed the planning approval procedure for another section of the SuedLink power line, from the boundary between Lower Saxony and Hesse to the boundary between Hesse and Thuringia near Herleshausen. The cables for projects 3 and 4 run parallel to each other in this section, which is around 65 kilometres long. The exact route of the new underground direct-current cables in the section has now been decided.
Section between the Lower Saxony-Hesse boundary to south of the Hesse-Thuringia boundary
The route begins at the boundary between Lower Saxony and Hesse near Neu-Eichenberg. It follows on from section C1, which is located in southern Lower Saxony and is already under construction. The cables run south down to the Werra river near Witzenhausen, where they follow the valley, passing underneath the river at several points. The cable route passes to the east of Bad Sooden-Allendorf and then runs southeast through the Ringgau region. The route passes under the Werra river again and ends south of the federal state boundary. It is followed on by section D1, which runs through Thuringia and is still at the planning approval stage.
The Bundesnetzagentur is due to publish its planning approval decision on 8 August 2025 at www.netzausbau.de/vorhaben3-c2 and www.netzausbau.de/vorhaben4-c2.
SuedLink power line as the backbone of the energy transition
The SuedLink power line consists of two direct-current lines. Project 3 connects Brunsbüttel in Schleswig-Holstein with Großgartach/Leingarten in Baden-Württemberg. Project 4 runs from Wilster to Bergrheinfeld in Bavaria. The two lines will be laid as underground cables and run mostly parallel to each other. TenneT and TransnetBW are the transmission system operators responsible for planning, constructing and operating the lines.
