Bundesnetzagentur publishes figures on connection applications and approvals for battery storage for 2024
Year of issue 2025
Date of issue 2025.11.12
The Bundesnetzagentur has today for the first time published figures on connection applications and approvals for battery storage facilities.
In 2024 the network operators received a total of 9,710 connection applications for battery storage at medium-voltage level and above. This figure does not include domestic storage facilities. The facilities for which applications were made have a total planned capacity of around 400 gigawatts (GW) and a storage capacity of around 661 gigawatt hours (GWh).
At present 921 operational battery storage facilities are connected at medium-voltage level and above, with a net rated capacity of around 2.3 GW and a storage capacity of around 3.2 GWh.
In 2024 the network operators approved around 3,800 applications from 2024 and previous years for the connection of battery storage facilities with a total capacity of around 25 GW and a storage capacity of around 46 GWh. However, as the connection approvals are only binding for the network operators, not all projects will necessarily be implemented by the parties seeking connection.
Background
Battery storage facilities can help balance the fluctuations in electricity generation from renewable sources such as wind and solar energy and thus contribute to managing the energy transition. They can store electricity when there is a surplus and feed it back into the grid when demand is high. This is how battery storage can help stabilise the electricity markets, while securing the supply of electricity and allowing for a more efficient use of electricity from renewable energy sources.
The battery storage market is currently experiencing dynamic development, with a lot of projects being planned, built or expanded. The figures published today for the first time include data on connection applications at the distribution system operator level.
The information is based on the analysis of the recent monitoring survey and, due to system constraints, is only available for 2024. Information on the development in 2025 will be published in due course.
Detailed information on connection approvals and applications under review, broken down into transmission system operators and distribution system operators, is published by the Bundesnetzagentur at https://www.smard.de/page/home/topic-article/216804/218412/status-quo-der-batteriespeicheranfragen-2024.
