Results of auctions for CHP installations and innovative systems

The Bundesnetzagentur has today announced the results of the latest auctions for combined heat and power (CHP) installations and innovative CHP systems. The two separate auctions closed for bids on 1 December 2025. There was strong competition in the auctions, which were the last under the current legal framework. The CHP Auction Ordinance (KWKAusV) specifies the volumes for the auctions for CHP installations and innovative CHP systems each year up to 2025. However, there are currently no arrangements for 2026 and beyond. The auctions that closed for bids on 1 December 2025 were the first CHP auctions that the Bundesnetzagentur conducted digitally.

Auction for CHP installations

The entire volume up for auction was awarded. The bidding competition resulted in a lower average award price. A total of 41 bids with a combined volume of 135.668 megawatts (MW) were submitted for the auction volume of 107.964 MW. The auction was therefore significantly oversubscribed. The level of participation was about the same as in the previous auction (37 bids, 145.534 MW). There were 38 admissible bids (118.968 MW) and three inadmissible bids (16.700 MW).

A total of 33 bids with a combined volume of 108.658 MW were successful, compared with 17 bids and a total volume of 88.012 MW in the previous auction. The average volume-weighted award price is 5.02 cents per kilowatt hour, which is below the average award price in the previous auction (5.73 ct/kWh).

Auction for innovative CHP systems

The auction for innovative CHP systems was undersubscribed. Despite this, the bidding competition resulted in lower bid prices in this segment as well.

Six admissible bids with a combined volume of 27.599 MW were submitted for the auction volume of 34.261 MW and were successful. The number and the volume of the bids were much lower than in the previous auction (24 bids, 74.445 MW). By contrast, the volume awarded was slightly higher than last time (25.340 MW).

The average volume-weighted award price in this segment is 6.67 ct/kWh, which is lower than the average award price in the previous auction (7.15 ct/kWh).
