Progress in network expansion: Bundesnetzagentur approves power line from Rhineland-Palatinate to Luxembourg border
Year of issue 2026
Date of issue 2026.02.27
The Bundesnetzagentur has today completed the planning approval procedure for the electricity line from the rural district of Trier-Saarburg to the border between Germany and Luxembourg. The procedure included the approval for two new 110 kV circuits for Westnetz GmbH to replace existing lines.
Route
The line, which is about 11 kilometres long, will be constructed as a 380 kV extra-high voltage line close to the existing line. The pylons will also carry two 110 kV systems between Aach and Sirzenich that will be operated by Westnetz GmbH. The existing 110 kV and 220 kV overhead lines will be dismantled once the new overhead line has been constructed. The 110 kV overhead line that will also be carried will help to reduce the burden in the region as a whole.
The route begins in Ralingen near Aach and runs west of Hohensonne. The 110 kV line leaves the joint route northwest of Sirzenich to run southeast, while the 380 kV line runs south past Trierweiler and Fusenich. The route reaches the border between Germany and Luxembourg north of Langsur at the Sauer river.
The Bundesnetzagentur is due to publish its planning approval decision (in German) on 14 March 2026 at: www.netzausbau.de/vorhaben71.
Project between Trier-Saarburg rural district and German-Luxembourg border
The project will increase the transmission capacity between Germany and Luxembourg and contribute to the stability of the European electricity system. The project was confirmed in the Federal Requirements Plan Act 2021 as a priority network reinforcement measure and therefore did not require federal sectoral planning. The whole line is due to become operational in 2028.
The Bundesnetzagentur regularly updates the forecast on progress in electricity grid expansion and publishes the updates (in German) at www.netzausbau.de/prognose.
