Results of the September innovation and biomethane auction

The Bundesnetzagentur has today announced the results of the innovation and biomethane auction that closed for bids on 1 September 2026.
“The innovation auction was once again highly competitive. This is reflected in the decline in award values,”
said Klaus Müller, President of the Bundesnetzagentur. “The biomethane auction, on the other hand, continued to draw little interest from bidders.”
Innovation auction
The volume put up for auction was 475 megawatts (MW). A total of 53 bids with a volume of 678 MW were received. The auction was thus considerably oversubscribed. 32 bids with a combined volume of 480 MW were successful. All of the successful bids were for combinations of solar installations and storage facilities. The Bundesnetzagentur excluded four bids from the award procedure.
The prices of the successful bids ranged from 4.50 cents per kilowatt hour (ct/kWh) to 5.40 ct/kWh. The average volume-weighted award price was 5.14 ct/kWh, which was lower than that in the previous round (5.34 ct/kWh).
The federal states with the largest volumes awarded for sites were Bavaria (12 awards with a combined volume of 177 MW) and, with significantly lower volumes, Brandenburg (four awards, 94 MW) and North Rhine-Westphalia (four awards, 48 MW).
Biomethane auction
The auction was for a volume of 21 MW. Three bids with a volume of 6 MW were submitted. The auction was thus clearly undersubscribed. All bids were successful. The Bundesnetzagentur did not exclude any bids from the procedure.
The prices of the successful bids in the pay-as-bid auction ranged from 23.07 ct/kWh to 23.13 ct/kWh. The average volume-weighted award price was 23.12 ct/kWh and thus just below the maximum price of 23.13 ct/kWh.
